Isolated power outages Tuesday and yesterday

Failing distribution hardware caused a two-hour power outage Tuesday, according to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.

Due to years of corrosion and exposure, a pole top pin within Kiya-4 failed, automatically tripping the feeder. Because of the loss of power, feeders 4 and 7, and Kiya 2 were also affected.

The outage started at 8:38pm and by 10:40pm everything was up and running, CUC said.

Also, moisture entered a high voltage short gear yesterday at Kiya-1, causing a 45-minute outage. While the feeder could be restored, line crews were not able to repair an underground cable until 5 pm.

CUC executive director Antonio Muna has said transmission equipment is the main reason for power outages now.

Some of the hardware that is supposed to isolate areas when an outage occurs is old and exposed to the elements, therefore not working properly, Muna said.

Muna said CUC has ordered its annual parts inventory, totaling around half a million dollars. Within that half million should be components to help with the transmission and distribution problems, he said.
