Island mathletes to face off in Saturday contest

Middle school mathletes from Saipan, Tinian and Rota will compete in the 15th Annual Chapter Competition of the national Mathcounts program on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Multi-Purpose Center, in Susupe from 8am to 12pm. The competition is being organized by EFC Engineers and Architects Corp.

A total of 14 schools and approximately 150 students will compete. Schools represented are Calvary Christian Academy, Dandan Elementary School, Eucon International School, Eskuelan San Francisco De Borja, Grace Christian Academy-Saipan, Hopwood Jr. High School, Marianas Baptist Academy, Mount Carmel School, Rota Jr. High School, Saipan Community School, Saipan International School, Tinian Elementary School, Tinian Jr. High, and Whispering Palms School.

Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since last September. Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. Winners will receive trophies, and will advance to the State Mathcounts finals, to be held on March 7, 2009. The top four winners of the State competition will earn a trip to the National Competition, which is being held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida on May 8, 2009.

Mathcounts is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students, who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability.
