NMI awarded $129K emergency food and shelter program funds

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands has been selected to receive $129,675 under Phase 27 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the Commonwealth.

The award for the CNMI is based upon the total number of unemployed individuals the progran’s jurisdiction.

The selection was made by the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army; American Red Cross; United Jewish Communities; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A; and United Way of America.

A local board made up of the Mayor of Saipan, Karidat, American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the DCCA Division of Youth Services, Veteran’s Affairs Office, and others will determine how the funds appropriated by the U.S. Congress to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are to be distributed among local emergency food and shelter programs.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local, agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or unit of government, 2) have an accounting system, 3) practice nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.
