EDITOR’S NOTE:

I feel compelled to come to the defense of letter writer William Strand, whose Jan. 21 letter, “Racial purity in church,” has been creating a firestorm, mainly because quite a number of people apparently didn’t get it. Since his letter came out, we have received angry responses from readers who took the letter too literally.

To clarify, that letter by Mr. Strand was a satire, intended to expose the absurdity of something by using irony, sarcasm, and hyperbole. In this case, Mr. Strand was using sarcasm to show people why the idea of a racially pure church is ludicrous, irrational and racist garbage. Mr. Strand has been one of our more progressive letter writers and his previous letters to the editor show his penchant for using irony, derision and wit.
