32 teams sign up for 2009 season
A total of 32 teams have so far signified their intentions to participate in the upcoming 2009 season of Saipan Little League Baseball.
SLLB president Mike Borja yesterday announced that there would be a meeting of team managers, coaches, umpires, and technical officials tomorrow, Jan. 24, to discuss the final preparations for the seemingly fruitful season.
Borja said all pertinent documents would be distributed to the different teams during the meeting, which will start at 9am at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Included in the agenda will be the preparations for the opening ceremonies, which is scheduled on Valentine’s Day.
Borja said he expects that all the teams will be paying the entry fee of $500 on Saturday.
The teams that have confirmed to join included 15 for the Major Division, five for the Juniors Division, six for the Seniors Division, and six for the Big League Division.
Borja said all the defending champions in each division are expected to field in their roster of players, including the Patriots (Majors), Kagman Lions (Juniors), Jets (Seniors), and Tanapag (Big League).
SLLB originally set an early date (Jan. 10) for the opening but due to several but minor issues, they opted to return to the traditional starting month of February.
The SaipanCell Patriots are aiming for their fourth consecutive title this year.
Another upcoming event would be the CNMI District Tournament, which Saipan will be hosting in June.
After the district meet, which will feature the All-Star teams from Saipan, Tinian, and hopefully Rota, the CNMI bets will go to Hong Kong for the Junior, Senior, and Big League divisions of the 2009 Asia Pacific Regional Tournament late June. Indonesia will host the Majors qualifier.
Teams that will win in the regional meet will compete in the World Series.
Last year, Saipan swept the district meet, but only the Big League All-Stars competed in the World Series in Easley, South Carolina and came home winless in the tournament.
