Arts Council reports improved sales during Christmas exhibit
Despite the difficult times, there is hope for artists in the CNMI if the results of the annual Christmas Arts Exhibit are to be judged.
This is the assessment of NMI Council for Arts and Culture Coordinator Parker Yobei as he reported on the total sales from the month-long sales and exhibit.
The total sale was $1,250, which was better that last year’s $800.
Yobei said there were also more artists who participated in the exhibit compared to the previous year. The total participation was 47 in December 2008 while there were only 22 in 2007.
All the sales went to the artists.
Yobei said the Arts Council only provide the venue and help the artists prepare for the activity.
He said the art crafts such as earrings, Christmas ornaments and decorations made up of pandanas leaves were selling well.
The coconut carvings from Frank Cabrera were also hit among buyers, mostly tourists.
“I think the economic crisis did not affect our sales. People wants to buy gifts during the holidays,” Yobei said.
The next art exhibit will be in June but artists will also be participating in the Flame Tree Arts Festival in April.
CCAC said the membership for the festival organizing committee is still being organized.
