USS Peleliu Club is holding an 8-ball tournament tonight at 7pm to celebrate the birthday of the Garapan sports bar and watering hole’s owner, Ken Phillips.

The entry fee is $15 and in-house prizes will be provided.

“It’s just an excuse to have a larger pot,” said Phillips. “The players like it, but tell me they can only afford the larger amount once a month.”

Rolly Villanueva got in some practice Monday, coming back through the losers’ bracket to take the weekly $5 8-ball tournament.

Villanueva defeated Tata Billones and Juancho Mendoza before falling to John Mongami. Mongami had beaten Phillips and got a little payback for losing to Villanueva and finishing second in the previous week’s championship.

Nolan Cultura ran to the top of the winners bracket with wins over Franz De Luna, Taylor Watanabe, and Mongami. Watanabe had sent Rose Phillips to the losers’ bracket.

De Luna eliminated Rose Phillips but fell to Villanueva. Mendoza got by Ken Phillips and Billones before losing to Watanabe.

Villanueva then topped Watanabe, took the rematch from Mongami and beat Cultura twice to take the championship in four close games.

The Coco Restaurant employee has been on a bit of a roll lately, also taking second in last week’s Tuesday 9-ball round-robin tournament behind Ken Phillips.
