Two civilians saved the life of a 3-year-old boy who nearly drowned at Pau Pau Beach in San Roque Sunday afternoon.

The Department of Public Safety recognized yesterday Darrel B. Concepcion and Ashley A. Castro “for their exceptional bravery” in rescuing the boy.

DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said the boy had fluid in his lungs, but is currently in stable condition at the Commonwealth Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit.

Ogumoro quoted a police report as saying that a teenager was supervising the victim and other children while they were swimming.

The incident happened when the teenager left for a couple of minutes. The boy was found floating.

Concepcion was at a nearby pavilion when he saw a crowd near the shoreline. He checked and saw an unresponsive boy lying on the sand.

Concepcion immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy.

Castro was with family members at one of the pavilions when they heard several people screaming near the shoreline.

When Castro ran toward the shoreline, she saw Concepcion already applying CPR on the boy. Castro joined Concepcion in administering CPR on the victim until the medics arrived.

Medics transported the victim to CHC for further treatment and observation.

Ogumoro advised the community that it is extremely important that adults supervise children at all times, especially when children are swimming.
