Bayani showcases Philippine folk dances, songs
Tinikling, Pandango sa Ilaw, Salakot and Singkil are just some of the more popular folk dances in the Philippines and they were all big hits during Saturday evening’s show dubbed “Balik-Tanaw sa Kulturang Pilipino” (A Glimpse of Filipino Culture).
Organized by the Bayani Association and the United Filipino Organization, the two-hour show at the Hibiscus Hall of Fiesta Resort & Spa drew a huge audience, who got a glimpse of the richness of the Filipino culture through songs and dances.
The Bayani Dance Troupe opened their performances with Spanish inspired dances—Paso Doble, Polka sa Nayon, Mantones De Seda and Paseo De Ilo-Ilo.
Regional dances that were showcased included Idaw, Banga, Salidsid, Pandango sa Ilaw, Salakot, Sakuting, Tinikling, Makatod, Malong-Malong, kini-kini, Asik and Singkil.
Like any other cultural shows in the Philippines, the Tinikling was undoubtedly the biggest hit of the night. An indigenous dance inspired by farmers catching rice birds called tinikling, the dance features couples stepping in sync between bamboo poles that are being tapped against each other.
Besides the dances, the banquet show also featured folk songs interpreted by Ricky Custodio, Virginia Hernandez, Claire Ramos and Judy Lalaine Nodado.
Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL. Maximo stressed the importance of these traditional dances to the Filipino culture, saying they capture all the nuances of what it means to be a Filipino.
Net proceeds of the cultural show and dinner banquet will be donated to the Guma Esperansa.
Bayani Association president Tina Lifoifoi said that Guma Esperansa continues to provide shelter and assistance to victims of violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in the CNMI.
Guma Esperansa manager Lauri Ogumoro thanked the organizers, saying these would be a big help to their programs.
The cultural show was jointly sponsored by private companies including AON Insurance, Armatech, Century Insurance, Hardt Eye Clinic, Traders Insurance, IT&E/PTI, Pacific Homes Appliances, Tan Holdings Corp., Pacific Marine Industrial, Jo’s Corp., Shell Marianas, Fiesta Resort & Spa, KC Beauty Salon, Ren-ren Santos, and the Saipan Tribune and Marianas Variety.
