Hian Choi sets mark for January Ace
Refaluwasch Golf Association new member Hian Choi topped the club’s first tournament of the year besting 24 other participants Saturday at Coral Ocean Point.
Choi shot a net 65 in the RGA January Ace qualifying tournament and could take the first monthly title of the association if his score is unbeaten in the Feb. 1 tournament.
The 20-handicapper Choi fired a 45 on the front and 40 on the back for a gross 85 and a three-stroke win over fellow RGA newcomer Jerry Ayuyu and Carl Hocog.
Ayuyu and Hocog had identical net scores of 68, but the former took the second spot winning in the scorecard tiebreak.
The 18-handicapper Ayuyu drilled a 40 and 46 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 85. On the front nine, he made a net 31.5, beating Hocog’s net 32.5.
Hocog, a 13-handicapper, was consistent at the Agingan Point course hitting a 39 on the front and a 40 on the back nine.
Completing the Top 6 and getting cash prizes were Dwaine Stephens (net 69), Asterio Tawanpiy (69), and RGA tournament director Jess Wabol (70).
Stephens defeated Tawanpiy in the tiebreak for fourth place with the former’s net 36 on the front nine. The 18-handicapper Stephens tallied a 45 and 42 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 87.
Tawanpiy, a 9-handicapper, shot a 40 in the first nine holes, and improved his performances a bit in the last nine with a 38 for a gross 78. He had a net 36.5 on the front to lose to Stephens in the tiebreak.
The 2-handicapper Wabol recorded the lowest gross of the day with his even par 72 after shooting a 37 on the front and an impressive 1-under par 35 on the back.
RGA’s first tournament of the season drew a big field, which included Ben Duenas (net 71), Louis Byun (71), Bae Yoon Man (72), Joe Demapan (73), Bill Kaipat (73), Tars Olopai (74), Ray Tigilao (75), Jordan Kosam (75), Many Mangarero (76), Louie Tilipao (77), Gus Camacho (77), Ulyses Kapileo (78), Tony Satur (79), Joe Lizama 980), Jae Choi (80), Jin Kim (80), Tony Rogolifoi (81), Ed Kapileo (81), Tom Tebuteb (82), Joe Wabol (83), and Bill Limes (90).
Ayuyu and Choi won the closest to the pin contests on hole No. 7 and 14, respectively.
