Lady Dolphins top Lady Ayuyus
Marianas High School ended Kagman High School’s short winning run, as the Lady Dolphins notched a 48-43 win in their varsity division game in the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League Friday at the MHS Gymnasium.
The Lady Ayuyus won their first two games of the season downing Mt. Carmel School, 52-42, and Saipan Southern High School, 44-31.
But in their first meeting with the Lady Dolphins since last season’s title match, which the Lady Ayuyus won, MHS this time had the last laugh to remain unbeaten in the tournament. The Lady Dolphins walloped the Lady Rays in their debut game, 59-17.
In that 42-point blowout, mainstay Lalaine Pagarao top-scored for the Lady Dolphins with 15 points.
Against the Lady Ayuyus, Pagarao was still at the forefront of the Lady Dolphins’ attack firing a game-high 13 markers.
Jacque Wonenberg, who had seven points in her debut, played better, offensively against Kagman tallying 12 points.
Ira Palero was the third Lady Dolphins to score in double figures with 11 points. She made 14 in her first game helping MHS rout its foe.
Palero and Pagarao were the only two MHS players to make more than one field goal in the first quarter, which concluded with the Dolphins leading by seven, 14-7.
Wonenberg, who was held to two points, found her rhythm in the second quarter, as the Lady Dolphins outscored the Lady Ayuyus, anew, 15-18, to take 29-15 halftime lead.
Kagman recorded its first double figure production in the third canto allowing the Lady Ayuyus to mount a comeback.
Behind Yvonne Bennett’s seven points and Nikita Hofscheider’s six markers, Kagman outgunned MHS, 17-6, and moved within three, 32-35, entering the final canto.
But the Lady Ayuyus failed to sustain their momentum in the fourth, while the Lady Dolphins drew important baskets from Pagarao and rookie Lia Rangamar to preserve the win.
