Tony Deleon Guerrero missed the list of monthly Ace winners last year, but this season he was the first on the roll ruling Saipan Golfers Association’s season-opening tournament Sunday at the Coral Ocean Point.

Tony bested 19 other participants in the weekend tournament to claim the January Ace title. He shot a net 66 for a two-stroke win over Martin Sablan and Jose I. Sablan.

Martin and Jose nailed identical net scores of 68, but the former took the second spot beating the latter on the scorecard playoffs on hole No. 8. Martin double bogeyed the par-4 No. 8, while Jose made a triple bogey.

Tony, a former deputy director of Division of Environmental Quality, started sluggishly with his 45 on the front nine, but the 18-handicapper finished strong with a 39 on the back for a gross 84.

The 24-handicapper Martin tallied a 47 and 45 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 92, while the 22-handicapper Jose drilled a 46 in the first nine holes and 44 in the last nine for a gross 90.

Das Krishnan, an 18-handicapper, finished fourth with his net 71 and gross 88 following a 43 and 45 on the front and back nines, respectively.

Ron Hodges completed the Top 5 beating two other players in the scorecard playoffs. The 5-handicapper Hodges recorded the lowest gross score (76) firing a 39 and 37 on the front and back nines, respectively. Hodges, Peter Rojas, and Art Deleon Guerrero all scored a net 71.

Other participants in SGA’s first tournament of the season and their net scores were Ray Dela Cruz (72), Mariano Fajardo (72), Jess Castro (74), Ray Salas (74), Joe Rosario (74), 2008 Ace of Aces champion Joe Demapan (75), Steve Balakrishna (76), Jung Teack (78), Nobert Sablan (79), Ray San Nicolas (81), Larry I. Deleon Guerrero (81), and Ben Aldan (81).

Castro, Demapan, Rojas, Hodges, and Frank Rosario tallied two birdies apiece, while Balakrishna, Dela Cruz, Art, and Larry made one each.

In the longest drive contest, Fajardo won on the par-4 hole No. 6, while Art prevailed on hole No. 15.

Art also saved par on the par-3 No. 3, while Rojas (No. 7), Fajardo (No. 12), and Joe Sablan (No. 14) had the same feat on the three other par-3 holes.
