The Bayani Association will host a Filipino cultural show called “Balik-Tanaw Sa Kulturang Pinoy” today, Jan. 17, at 7pm, at the Hibiscus Hall of the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan in Garapan.

The two-hour cultural show and banquet dinner presents 16 cultural dances that portray the Filipinos’ regional culture, tradition and arts representing the Philippine islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The show will highlight the rich and diverse Filipino cultural heritage through the art of creative folk dancing and music.

Among the goals of the event are:

– To promote and preserve Filipino culture through creative folk dances from various regions in the Philippines and showcasing Filipino fashion and arts;

– To raise funds for the Bayani Association, with the CNMI’s Guma’ Esperansa as the chosen beneficiary for the net proceeds of the event;

– To encourage more members of the Bayani Association—mostly overseas Filipino workers—to actively participate in this recreational activity;

– To promote values such as unity, perseverance, temperance, and diligence in pursuing the objectives of the Bayani Association.

Filipino cultural dances have five categories: Cordillera, Rural, Maria Clara, Tribal and Muslim. These dances will be choreographed in a creative way by Joel Vallega, i.e., some authentic dance steps would be modified to suit the performer’s capabilities without losing the identity of a particular dance. The entire show lasts for about two hours. The participants will showcase Filipiniana fashion by wearing barong Tagalog, baro’t saya, patadyong, Maria Clara, Cordillera,tribal and Muslim costumes. Dance music will be accompanied by short introductions for the audience enlightenment.

The Bayani Association is a duly registered non-profit organization in the CNMI with overseas Filipino worker members who successfully completed various free skills upgrading courses at the Filipino Workers Resource Center on Saipan. Among its objectives is to uphold, preserve and promote the fundamental values and culture of the Filipinos through sharing of ideas and information.
