Back-to-back for Lady Ayuyus
Defending champion Kagman High School notched back-to-back wins in the girls varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League after downing Saipan Southern High School, 44-31, yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Ayuyus controlled the game from start to finish giving coach Francis San Nicolas the luxury of using his bench in the latter part of the match.
Of San Nicolas’ 12 players, nine made it to the scoreboard with Mercedes Mesa leading the way with nine points.
Agatha Repeki chipped in eight, making six of them in the second period to help KHS increased its three-point lead, 8-5, in the first period to 14 at halftime, 26-12.
The Lady Rays scored in double figures for the first time in the third canto with Diane Joseph firing eight of her team’s 10 points in that period.
Kagman answered with one field goal apiece from four players to remain on top, 34-22, entering the final canto.
Southern failed to make headway in the payoff period dropping to a 0-2 start this season.
Despite the loss, the Lady Rays made a significant improvement from their 17-59 defeat at the hands of Marianas High School.
In their debut game, the Lady Rays had only five players contributing on offense with their highest scorer making only six markers.
Yesterday, Joseph led all scorers with 13 markers, and six others made it into the scoreboard.
For the Lady Ayuyus, the 13-point win over Southern was a fitting follow-up of their 52-42 triumph over Mt. Carmel School during the opening of the league last week.
Kagman’s boys team was debuting Southern last night, but results of the game were unavailable at press time.
Today, Kagman will go for win No. 3 when it faces MHS. Today, the Ayuyus will duel the MHS Dolphins, who beat the Rays in their debut, 63-55.
The Lady Ayuyus will also battle the Lady Dolphins today with the former aiming for win No. 3.
