The 8th grade class of the Saipan Seventh-day Adventist School will hold its 3rd Annual Freedom Run on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this coming Monday, Jan. 19.

The five-kilometer run is a fundraising event for the 8th grade class trip as well as an event to pay tribute to the great civil rights leader.

The 3rd Annual Freedom Run will begin at 5:15pm at the Garapan Fishing Base and end at the Kilili Beach pavilion.

The registration fee is $10 and all finishers will be eligible for prizes at a drawing to be held after the race. Registration for the run will begin at 4:30pm.

Participants may pre-register at the Saipan SDA School or Saipan SDA Dental Clinic. When the race is finished transportation back to the Garapan Fishing Base will be provided for those who need it.

The 8th grade class is raising funds for its annual class trip. In the past, classes have visited Japan, the Philippines, Bali, Australia, Palau, Hawaii, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, and New Zealand.

This year the students hope to visit Japan. The students will spend several weeks learning about the geography, history, and culture of Japan before traveling to the island nation to learn about and experience the Land of the Rising Sun first hand.

Last year, ageless wonder Steven Pixley led a pack of 38 other participants from the starting point followed closely by Mieko Carey, who was the top female finisher.
