Shiori Onoue started the 2009 season with a victory in the CNMI Women’s Golf Association’s January tournament last week on the west course of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.

Onoue shot a net 72 to beat the mother-and-daughter tandem of Noriko and Yuko Togawa, and 14 other participants.

The 7-handicapper Onoue was consistent in her game with a 4-over par 40 on the front nine and a 3-over par 39 on the back for a gross 79.

Also drilling a gross 79 was Yuko, who has a six handicap and settled for second place with a net 73. The younger Togawa had similar scores with Onoue on the front and back nines.

Her mother recorded the lowest gross score of 5-over par 77. But with a three handicap, Noriko dropped to third with her net 74. Noriko started strong with a 1-over par 37 on the front nine and closed out with a 4-over par 40 on the back.

Eun Joo Song matched Noriko’s net score of 74, but settled for fourth place after losing in the scorecard playoffs. Song had a 45 and 46 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 91.

Other participants in the group’s first tournament of the year were Bennet Seman (net 75), Grace Seo (76), Terry Tudela (78), Terue Ukita (78), Grace Wang (80), Chin Lin Wang (83), Lou Kim (86), Lorraine Babauta (88), Kimiko Abe (84), Doll Yamagishi (80), Aya Matsumoto (77), Eun Ae Chang (83), and Hanna Kyung (79).

For failing to submit scorecards, the last four participants finished tied for 11th place with three others despite having better net scores than the ninth and 10th placers.

Established in March 2007, CWGA is a nonprofit organization founded to promote, encourage, and introduce women to the sport of golf in the CNMI.

CWGA also commits its members to abide by a set of values that will further enrich a golfer’s performance, attitude, and conduct-adopted from the USA Junior Golf Association.
