Tun Goru Snack Bar held its grand opening yesterday with proprietress and manager Carmen T. Cabrera offering free local delicacies such as titiyas and apigigi to well-wishers and passersbys.

Located on the old Escos Bakery building in Capital Hill, Cabrera said Tun Goru Snack Bar is named after her father, the late Gregorio “Tun Goru” C. Cabrera, and has been in operation since Dec. 23 last year.

She only decided to hold the grand opening for the snack bar yesterday because Jan. 13 marks the wedding anniversary of her parents. Her mother, Escolastica Cabrera, attended the event yesterday along with several family members and friends.

Cabrera said she decided to open Tun Goru Snack Bar because the island community has been “clamoring for local sweets and delicacies since Escos Bakery closed in 2007.”

She said aside from local residents, Tun Goru Snack Bar also will cater to tourists and Chamorros and Carolinians from Tinian, Rota, and even Guam.

Cabrera said since they opened late last month, a number of tourists from China, Japan, and Korea have picked up some of their items to get a taste of what Saipan food has to offer.

Aside from titiyas and apigigi, Tun Goru Snack Bar also sells all-time favorites like bibingka, chicken kelaguen, empanada, gazuria, man’ha biscuit, pan tuba, rosketti, tamales, potu, and local versions of cookies and donuts.

Cabrera added that she also sells all types of sandwiches at the snack bar, which includes hamburgers, cheeseburgers, egg burger cheese, ham & egg, grilled cheese, and egg and tuna.

Soups in the menu, meanwhile, are corn soup, charakilis, aruskatdo, and miso soup. Cabrera said Tun Goru Snack Bar also serves breakfast, hot lunch, and soba during its operating hours, which are 7am-6pm Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm Saturday, and 9am-6pm Sunday.

In addition, customers can also call Tun Goru Snack Bar for special orders for Angel Cake, cheesecake, sponge cake, and ahu lantiyas.
