The 2008 Golfer of the Year title will be at stake this weekend when the Fil-Taga Golfers Association holds two rounds of play at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talofofo and the Marianas Country Club in Marpi.

Kingfisher will host the first round of the Golfer of the Year tournament, which will feature the 12 monthly winners in 2008.

Check-in time is at 11am, while tee off is at 11:30am this Saturday.

The second round of play at MCC this Sunday will have the same check-in and tee times and the event will double as the 2009 January Ace of the Month tournament.

Besides getting the 2008 Golfer of the Year title, the top winner in the weekend tournament will take home a trophy and $300 cash.

A special prize of $300 will be given to a participant who will make a hole-in-one shot in the second round, while closest to the pin winners on par-3 holes will pocket $25 each.

Each of the 12 monthly winners in 2008 will receive a trophy and $100 after the second round of play.

Mike Cruz earned the last qualifying slot for the Golfer of the Year tournament when he topped the December Ace of the Month event at MCC on Dec. 21.

Cruz prevailed over 20 other golfers with his net 66. The 21-handicapper had a gross 87. He was four strokes ahead of second placer Matutino Adony (70) and enjoyed a six-shot advantage over five others who had identical net scores of 72.

Locked in a five-way tie for third to seventh place were Pete Reyes, Manny Corcuerra, Ted Malaran, Jun Ortiz, and Greg Gamboa.

Other Fil-Taga members who joined the December Ace tournament were Rodrigo Nimes (73), Freddie Cataluna (74), Joe Miranda (74), Mando Guban (74), Jason Gatdula (74), Jhun Calma (77), Rey Ferraz (77), Manny Po (77), James Lin (78), Jess Yumul (79), Rene Batallones (80), Williams Retardo (81), Richard Meimban (810), and Dionysus Geva (82).

Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.
