Upward Bound alumnus visits NMC, speaks to current program members

When he’s not busy flying helicopters for the U.S. Marine Corps, 1Lt. Adrian Evangelista, a former Upward Bound Program student, makes time to meet with and talk to current students about his experiences.
After graduating from the Upward Bound Program in 2000, Evangelista entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland to be certified as a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Marine Corps. At the Academy, Evangelista earned a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. He also took aviation training for his recently earned “Wings of Gold” certification. He credits former Gov. Juan Babauta for helping him choose a military career.
During his recent visit to the Northern Marianas College, Evangelista offered some advice to current Upward Bound Students. He told the students about sacrifices and challenges that lie ahead, and that there was rewarding outcome in the end.
Evangelista also provided some insight about how he was admitted to the Academy and how he completed the rigorous program. Further, he stressed that the Upward Bound Program was a great program that helped him prepare for college.
The Upward Bound Program at the Northern Marianas College is a federally funded program designed to help participants prepare for college. The program provides instruction in a variety of subjects; academic, financial, and personal counseling; tutorial and mentoring services; assistance with college admission forms and placement tests; and other services.
