A man died of electrocution yesterday after the stick he was using to harvest fruits from a breadfruit tree crossed lines with the live wire of an electric pole in Chalan Kanoa.

According to witnesses, the man died instantly from the electric shock.

Police authorities were still completing reports on the incident and have yet to release the identity of the victim.

The incident happened around 12pm at the corner of Chalan Kanoa Drive and Dolores St., where an electric pole with a transformer sits right next to a big breadfruit tree inside a private residence.

Witnesses in the area told the Saipan Tribune that the victim had earlier asked permission to climb the tree, the top of which was higher than the power pole.

They said the victim was using a stick made of steel or aluminum, which apparently hit the live wire, and he died instantly from the electric shock.

Witnesses said that rescuers spent about over an hour trying to take the victim’s body down from the breadfruit tree.

He was later sent to the hospital.

The nursing supervisor at the Commonwealth Health Center said they could not release any details regarding this incident until Monday when administrative officials report for duty because it is only through them that any information may be given to the public.

But, according to a source, the victim was already dead even before reaching the emergency room.

Department of Public Safety’s public information officer Lei Ogumoro could not provide more information about the case as she is reportedly on administrative leave.
