Basketball courts in three villages renovated
Three villages in Precinct 4 had their basketball courts renovated through the efforts of Rep. Joseph Norita Camacho.
The basketball courts, which got a facelift, are located in Tanapag, San Roque, and As Matuis.
“Precinct 4 has four public basketball courts—Capital Hill, Tanapag, San Roque, and As Matuis. The Capital Hill basketball court had been renovated so it was in a relative good condition. The Tanapag, San Roque, and As Matuis basketball courts needed new boards, rims, and lights. The plywood boards were rotted away and the rims were bent and useless from rust. The lighting units were missing,” Camacho said.
With the poor condition of these courts, they are used as parking lots instead of a venue for basketball competitions and other recreational activities.
Camacho added when he talked to some residents of these villages, parents were worried about kids wandering in the streets and, worse, getting involved in bad activities because they have nothing worthwhile to do.
“‘The kids are bored because there is nothing to do and no wonder why they are getting in trouble’ was a common statement I heard from parents and residents of Precinct 4,” Camacho said.
“People come to basketball courts to play. Friends, neighbors, and families are coming to play or just relax and watch other people play,” the lawmaker added.
Through the assistance of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and Commonwealth Utilities Corp., Camacho started to work on the things needed to refurbish the courts.
Plywood and paint were purchased to fix the board and replace the rims. New lighting units were also bought and volunteers did the water blasting of the concrete courts before painting the lines.
Once the renovations were done, Camacho saw several kids staying at the basketball courts anew and having fun playing with their friends.
