Public warned of high waves
The Emergency Management Office issued a high-surf advisory yesterday, saying that CNMI waters will be unsafe due to large waves that will persist until Friday evening.
A high-surf advisory means that high surf will affect exposed reefs and beaches in the area, producing dangerous rip currents. The public is urged to avoid venturing near reefs and exposed beaches as wind and wave conditions support dangerous rip currents. Rip currents are life threatening to anyone entering the water.
A small-craft advisory for hazardous seas will also remain in effect until 6pm Friday. Boaters should exercise caution when entering harbors.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam, EMO said that east swells produced by fresh trade winds will produce hazardous surf on east and north facing reefs until Friday evening.
Expect hazardous surf of up to 9 feet on north facing reef and up to 12 feet on east facing reefs. This surf will remain hazardous through Friday evening.
Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north and east facing reefs.
On Rota, north-facing beaches include Teteto Beach. On Saipan, north-facing beaches include Achugao Beach and east-facing beaches include Tank Beach. On Tinian, east-facing beaches include Long Beach. (EMO)
