Three high schools get soccer equipment anew from NMIFA
Northern Marianas Islands Football Association donated equipment to three public high schools on Saipan to help them prepare for the 2009 soccer league in January.
Saipan Southern High School’s Glenn Smith and Joel Punzalan, and Marianas High School’s Maria Ornes met with NMIFA treasurer Vickie Isuka and Patricia Coleman at the NMIFA Office located on the third floor of the TSL Plaza in Garapan to receive the donation. Kagman High School is the third recipient of the donation package, but failed to attend the ceremony yesterday.
The equipment package is composed of 20 pieces of size 5 soccer balls, two pieces of ball bags, seven pairs of shin guards, a ball pump, six needles, and a pair of gloves.
The three high schools are expected to join next month’s soccer league along with two private schools.
The Manta Rays won last year’s soccer league beating Mt. Carmel School in the finals.
Representatives/coaches of some schools met with NMIFA officials yesterday to discuss details of the upcoming league, which is tentatively set to kick off on Jan. 15.
The Marianas Interscholastic Sports Association will be at the forefront of organizing the league and will get help from NMIFA, which may provide the league referees during matches and other technical/manpower assistance.
Organizers are planning to hold games twice a week with matches starting at 4:30pm. Venues have yet to be finalized, as organizers wanted a consensus from all parties involved.
Venues being considered are the Oleai Sports Complex Field, SSHS Field, Hopwood Junior High School Field, and CPA Field.
Organizers are also looking to have a double-round robin format in the regular season if there will be four or five teams joining the league. But the format for the playoffs will still be discussed.
Games will be 11 vs. 11 with 30-minute playing time per half. A win will give teams three points, one for a draw, and none for a loss.
