A Japanese group from the Heiwa O Inoru Chisan Kyokai, traveling from all around Japan, visited Tinian Elementary School on Nov. 26, 2008, the day before Thanksgiving, and met with the staff and students in the school cafetorium.

The group’s president, Riwa Satou addressed the students and staff. Present during the presentation was George Manglona, teacher aide at TES, who translated for the group.

According to Riwa Satou, the group has visited Saipan annually, but this was the first time that they had visited Tinian. The group talked about the war and how innocent people died because of it. They also discussed with students about how everyone should work together toward peace on Earth.

Prior to the group’s visit to Tinian, TES principal Maria T. Rios, received a telephone call informing her that a group of Japanese would be visiting TES and would be donating $1,000 for instructional materials. In order to accommodate the needs of all students, Rios decided that the money would be used to purchase sports equipment, as the school has very little.

With the funding limitations from the local government, this was truly a blessing for Tinian Elementary School. The students now have the equipment they need for Physical Education. The equipment chosen includes badminton, croquet, baseball bats and balls, hula hoops, volleyballs, soccer balls, ping-pong sets, Frisbees and marker cones for the athletic field.

Student representatives from each grade level were chosen to receive the gifts on behalf of their class. The staff, students and parents of Tinian Elementary School expressed gratitude to the “Heiwa O Inoru Chisan Kyokai” group and their members, which included Riwa-Satoi, Toshikazu Sato, Koshin Korei, Mayuki Ueno, Shinya Omori , Shunin Baba, Ryuken Taniguchi, Masatoshi Kondo, Shunin Kawakami, Shobotu Tsutsui, Takahiro Kaminaka, Takonobu Kurata, Shoyoh Shibuya, Masahiro Nishina, Yasutaka Inoue, Sadanori Iso, Toshihide Nishikawa, Shomasa Okabe, Takatomo Abe, Masakazu Tanaka, Ryosuke Shimizu, Tokiko Tanaka, Emiko Tanaka, Masahiro Hosada, and Naoya Miyamura. (PR)
