A 48-year-old man who had just gone to the hospital for a dialysis checkup died later in the driver’s seat of his car at a tire shop in Puerto Rico Monday morning.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesperson Police Officer 2 Jason T. Tarkong said yesterday that Arthur James Cruz, 48, was taken to the Commonwealth Health Center where he was pronounced dead by a doctor at 11:21am on the same day.

Tarkong said that on Monday at 10:54am, a police officer responded to YUCO Tire Shop on Chalan Pale Arnold Road (Middle Road) in Puerto Rico after DPS received a call about an injured person.

When Police Officer David Rabauliman arrived at YUCO Tire Shop, he found Cruz lying on the driver’s seat with no pulse.

The officer noticed blood around the victim’s mouth and nose. A pool of blood was also found on the garage floor next to the driver’s side of the car Cruz was in.

Medics arrived and transported Cruz to CHC, where he was pronounced dead.

Tarkong said police learned that the victim was at CHC at 6am that day for a dialysis checkup.

Cruz apparently left the hospital at 9am and went to YUCO Tire Shop to fix his tire.

A witness noticed Cruz coughing and spitting out blood. Witnesses offered assistance to the victim but he refused, saying, “No, thanks.”

Cruz went inside his car and sat down on the driver’s seat. Later, when a witness noticed him vomiting blood, he asked a friend to call 911 for emergency.
