New car sales dip by more than half
The Commonwealth Automobile Dealers Association reported yesterday that new car sales fell 55 percent last month after the islands’ three auto dealerships sold only 22 units in November 2008 compared to the 49 in November 2007.
Microl Corp. led the way with 11 new car sales, a 63.33-percent decrease from the 30 units sold in the same period last year. The San Jose automobile dealership, which captured 50 percent of the market, sold five cars, five sport utility vehicles and one truck last month.
Microl Corp. was followed by Joeten Motors, which saw a 14.29-percent increase in sales with eight units sold last month compared to the seven sold in November 2007. The auto dealership of the Joeten Group of Companies sold three trucks, three SUVS, one car and one van. It had a 36.62 percent share of the market in November 2008.
Triple J Motors, meanwhile, saw a 75-percent drop in sales with three units sold in November 2008 compared to 12 in the same period in 2007. The lower Garapan auto dealership sold two SUVS and one car and cornered 13.64 percent of the market last month.
Altogether, 10 SUVS, seven cars, four trucks and one van were sold last month. Toyota was the most popular car and SUV model, selling five each. Nissan was the most popular model for trucks and the sole van sold was a Ford.
Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet, while Joeten Motors sells Nissan, Ford, Honda, and Kia. Triple J Motors sells Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki and Mazda.
