Team, individual champs crowned

Five teams and seven individuals went home with championship trophies last week after ruling their respective competitions.

First on the list was Brotherhood, which topped the men’s division of the 2008 Belau Amateur Softball Association Softball League at the Dandan Elementary School Ballfield.

Brotherhood prevailed over Man Amigos in the best-of-three title series, winning Games 1 and 3.

Brotherhood’s Jerry Ayuyu was named Finals MVP making two homers in the deciding Game 3. Ayuyu’s teammate—J.J. Laniyo—won the regular season MVP plum.

In the women’s division, Sakudi defeated the Hitters, also in a best-of-three title showdown. Sakudi also claimed Games 1 and 3 to take the women’s championship.

Sakudi pitcher Bego Camacho was adjudged Finals MVP, while teammate Jenny Palacios took the regular season MVP honors.

In the ongoing Inaugural 2008 PILCOWA-San Miguel Beer Basketball League at CIC Centre Basketball Court in Garapan, Century Insurance gained the pennant championship.

Century secured the pennant after winning its rain-suspended game against C&R/NRG in overtime, 104-96.

Century finished the regular season tied with MIGS with its 5-1 record, but the former won the tiebreak having beaten the latter in their lone meeting in the regular season, 98-94.

The pennant champion automatically notched a semis ticket in the annual caging, which will begin its playoffs this Saturday.

Acme Roofing also took the pennant in the 2008 Miller Lite Four-Person Beach Volleyball Fall League with its 10-0 record in the regular season and capped its campaign in the annual event with a 15-21, 21-17, 15-10 win over Enyophace in the finals.

Acme Roofing was composed of Larry Sheri, Jazz Roscow, Luther Taylor, Elizabeth Henke, Jeanni Brown, and Dana McFadden. Also on the team, but did not play in the finals were JR Ngeskebei and Rob Jordan.

In the Philippine Bowling Association-Budweiser Saturday Night League, which finished early this month, PTI received its championship trophy last week.

The team was composed of Ramir De Leon, Mindy Taitano, Ronald Fuellas, Ronald Epan, Bernard Paraiso, Richie Dumlao, and Roger Vales.

PTI prevailed over Fiesta Resort & Spa, Gigi’s Angels, Scrambled Eggs, and Teax X.

Seven individuals duplicated five teams’ feats last week.

Golfer Vince Attao was one of them besting 28 other participants in the Rotary Club of Saipan’s 2008 District Governor’s Charity Golf Tournament on the west course of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.

Attao carded a net score of 70.80 in the double peoria tournament to beat Yasu Irinaka (net 71) and former Superior Court presiding judge Ed Manibusan (71.40).

The six other individual champions crowed last week were CNMI junior tennis players, who put on a show in the 2008 Fall Classic Junior Tennis Championships.

The champions’ list include Benjie Decena, Thea Minor, Christian Miller, Ilia Corella, Tammy Ackerman, and Kennedy Isuka.

Decena and Minor ruled the boys and girls’ 18-and-under division, Miller and Corella prevailed in the 14-and-under age group, and Ackerman and Isuka topped the 10-and-under category.
