Acme Roofing wins beach volleyball fall league
Acme Roofing lived up to its name ending the 2008 Miller Lite Four-Person Beach Volleyball Fall League on top of the field after beating Enyophace in the title match Thursday night on the PIC sand court.
The first word of the team’s name Acme means highest point and true to its name, Acme Roofing reached the peak of the tournament after pulling off a come-from-behind, 15-21, 21-17, 15-10 win in the finals.
The victory was a perfect way to culminate the fall league for Acme Roofing as it also led the regular season with a clean 10-0 record.
Acme Roofing defeated Thai One On in the semifinals to gain the first finals slot. Enyophace downed Karakuchi in the other semis duel to set the stage for the title showdown between the top two teams in the league. Enyophace finished second to Acme Roofing in the regular season with a 9-1 slate.
Enyophace was off to a good start in the championship match with its service game working, Apple Samson making tricky ball placements, and Dan Westphal and Bruce Berline holding their ground on the net against Acme Roofing’s Larry Sheri and Jazz Roscow.
But things began to go Acme Roofing’s way with Larry Sheri starting to hit those powerful kills and Luther Taylor spending most of the night diving for the ball.
In the second set, Westphal and Berline were out of the court and were replaced by young spikers Brandon Chargualaf and Ken Tanzawa. The two relievers almost pulled it off for Enyophace helping their team tie the game at 16-all, after trailing at 10-16.
But Sheri restored order to Acme Roofing, leaping up for killer spikes to send the game in a deciding third set.
Sheri started the third set with a big kill and the ensuing plays saw Acme Roofing prevailing on the battle on the net.
Acme Roofing was threatening to pull away leading by six, 9-3, when Enyophace sued for time. It was a good move, as Enyophace scored two straight points with Taylor diving for the ball on two occasions, but failing to reach it for the first time and hitting it too hard on the second instance.
Roscow moved Acme Roofing within a point of wrapping up the match when his kill dropped at the back line with no Enyophace player manning the spot.
Taylor, who had troubles going for skills and blocking Enyophace spikers in the first set with sand making its way to his eyes, had the last say in the game when he hit a powerful kill from the right side, a few inches away from the net. Enyophace decided not to block Luther and it paid for the gamble when the ball went to the backline and Mel Matson was not able to receive it.
Sheri, Roscow, and Taylor played without relief and was joined by teammates Elizabeth Henke, Jeanni Brown, and Dana McFadden in receiving their cash prize of $100. J.R. Ngeskebei and Rob Jordan were the other members of the team, but failed to play in the finals.
