Too generous

Imagine, just less than six weeks ago, executives of the Laolao Golf Resort came out in the papers and said they’re ready to proceed with the multi-million dollar project. A month after that exciting words, they were on the paper again, this time, they were asking for a tax break, citing numerous reasons, i.e., economy is not so good, low tourism arrivals, etc.

They were granted the lease, I believe they were also granted the tax break, and now, they are scaling down. What kind of investors are we allowing to invest in the CNMI? They came and said we have money to invest and a few months later, they asked for a tax break. Worst of all, our leaders grant them their request.

I know a lot of our people are aware of our economic situation, and I’m also very sure that this “investors” are also aware. The point is, they said they have money to invest, but just when they were granted what they want, they turn around and take advantage of our soft-hearted leaders. The problem is we are too generous, too eager without doing a proper screening of the so-called investors, or some are too lenient.
