8 incumbents lose. Democrats increase representation [/B]

Saturday’s polls yielded surprising results including the defeat of Saipan Republican Sen. Juan P. “Morgen” Tenorio, the rise of the Democrats, and the unseating of six Republican incumbents in the House of Representatives. Although the Republicans continue to claim the upper hand in the lower house, Democrats have managed to seize six of the 18 seats.
[B] 11-1 gets people’s nod[/B]

NMI voters on Saturday cast their approval on a controversial proposal seeking to limit to the indigenous people the right to vote on land matters, but a leading oppositor to the legislative initiative said she’s weighing the option of bringing the battle to the U.S. Supreme Court. Unofficial results provided by the Board of Elections showed that 5,903 voters, or 54.77 percent of the total votes cast, said “yes” to Legislative Initiative 11-1, and its author, Senate Vice President Thomas P. Villagomez, described it as a victory for the NMI descent.

Teno to join NMI delegation to Manila[/B]

Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio is planning to join the five-man CNMI delegation that will travel to Manila to formalize the amendments to the existing bilateral labor agreement with the Philippine government. The scheduled November meeting was, however, temporarily moved to middle of December reportedly because of the arrival of Taiwanese government and aviation officials to Manila for talks on the air agreement between the Philippines and Taiwan.
[B] US election: what it means for the CNMI[/B]

Island leaders and residents are closely watching the U.S. election being held today (Tuesday on the mainland) as the result is crucial to the CNMI’s future relations with the federal government. Many local officials are hoping that Republican candidate, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, wins in the tight race for the presidency against Democrat bet, Vice President Al Gore, if only to block any federal takeover attempt.

Businesses sending workers home[/B]

Businesses have started sending some of their nonresident workers home due to the worsening economic situation in the Northern Marianas. Hyatt Regency Saipan took a painful cut in its manpower, as the hotel reportedly retrenched 80 contractual workers while implementing a 30-hour work week.
[B] Blaze gutted Garapan restaurant[/B]

A fire broke out at a restaurant along Beach Road in Garapan yesterday afternoon. No one was reported injured. Firefighters immediately responded to the scene and managed to put off the blaze before it could even spread to adjacent establishments.

GOP victory thrills NMI[/B]

Gov. Juan N. Babauta’s Republican administration was elated over the remarkable triumph of fellow Republicans in the U.S. midterm elections, citing the advantages it would give to the Commonwealth. Republican members of the CNMI Legislature echoed the administration’s outlook, specifically pleased over the sweeping election victories that have established GOP’s majority control over the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.

[B]Saipan Diamond Hotel takeover looms[/B]

A group of Korean investors is reportedly in discussion with the management of the Saipan Diamond Hotel for a possible buy-out deal. Both parties are reportedly ironing out several issues to finalize the agreement. Reports are rife that World Corporation has entered into an agreement with the Diamond Hotel management to discuss a possible takeover of operation as loose ends are being tied up.

CHC sets up triage desk[/B]

Amid complaints about delayed medical services, the Commonwealth Health Center Emergency Room has set up a triage desk to provide immediate attention to arriving patients. The DPH said two nurses will be working at the desk everyday-including weekends and holidays-from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
