NMI Senate congratulates Obama
The Senate yesterday joined in to offer its congratulations to president-elect Barack Obama on his electoral triumph.
Senate members voted unanimously to adopt a resolution hailing the election of Obama as the 44th president of the United States, and congratulating him on behalf of the Commonwealth.
“The election of the first African-American president is a truly historic event. I believe it warrants the expression of our congratulations to Mr. Obama,” Senate President Pete P. Reyes, sponsor of the resolution, told his fellow lawmakers yesterday.
The resolution, now bound for a vote in the House of Representatives, states, “As part of the American political family, the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands join the nation in recognizing this significant and momentous occasion in our nation’s history.”
“With this election, the people of the Commonwealth are hopeful that positive and productive change will take place in our nation’s capital and throughout the world. The people of the [CNMI] are committed to help bring about this change by working together with the Obama administration and our regional partners,” it adds.
The senators also expressed hope that the new administration will strengthen ties between the continental United States and its outlying areas.
“It is the hope and intention of the 16th Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature to foster a new and constructive relationship between the leadership of the CNMI and the new White House administration,” the resolution says.
