The Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture recently obtained a Partnership Grant worth $283,300 from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Former CCAC director Cecilia Taitano-Celes, who is now the Secretary of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, said the grant would be used for educational enhancement.

The amount is divided into three components: State Arts Plan ($237,300), Arts Education ($12,000), and Arts in Underserved Communities ($34,000).

The grant will run for a yearlong period from Oct. 1, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2009.

The emphasis is to support local artists in their activities.

The federally funded grant will give an opportunity for community organizations to apply for funding, with focus on arts and education, such as artwork classes.

Schools can also apply for the grant.

Taitano-Celes said requests could be made to the CCAC and the board of directors would review such requests.

Application for the grant is open to any group or institutions as long as their main objective is the preservation of the local culture such as dance performances.

Taitano-Celes said this is a historic grant for CCAC because it would provide them a way to undertake programs in preserving the culture and arts in the Marianas.

One of the programs will be the creation of books for young authors with the aim of spreading art not only on Saipan but also among the youth on Rota and Tinian.

CCAC will also continue to hold arts exhibits such as the annual Arts Pacifica at the Joeten Motors showroom.

“We will continue to do it outdoors following the success of our exhibit in October,” Taitano-Celes said.
