KABA Modern to perform live in MHS show
The stars of California-based youth dance group KABA Modern will be performing live on Saipan as special guests in the search for the CNMI’s Best Dance Crew this Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Marianas High School Gym.
The three-pair group will also be judging the dance competition, which will be presented by and for the benefit of the Marianas College Foundation.
KABA Modern’s six members appeared on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. They are Mike Song, Jia Huang, Cindy Minowa, Tony Tran, Lawrance Kao and Yuri Tag.
According to Wikipedia, KABA Modern is a spin-off of the University of California, Irvine Filipino cultural club, Kababayan.
Headed by Arnel Calvario, the group began as a dance group that performs the hip-hop dance portion for the club’s annual PCN or Pilipino Cultural Night. Kababayan means countryman in Tagalog.
Show producer Ed Arriola Jr. said the KABA Modern will be coming to Saipan to perform and judge the search for the best dance crew in the CNMI, which will feature eight teams from Saipan and one each from Rota and Tinian.
Arriola said these dance groups are made up of mostly high school and college students “who are hungry to take the championship, and have their video submitted to MTV Networks for Season 3 of the show next February.”
He said the winning group will have a chance to fly to Los Angeles and compete in the show.
Tickets are $5 each and are available at PTI Garapan, Mobil Kagman, Power 99 Studios, KWAW 100.3 Studios, Pacific Trading Company and NMC Bookstore.
Arriola said the event will be primarily used as a marketing event to attract more students to NMC, the CNMI’s lone higher education institution.
The NMC Foundation extends special thanks to Tan Holdings Foundation, PTI, Mobil, Power 99/Sorensen Media Group, Pepsi, KWAW 100.3, Continental Airlines, Hertz, G4S Security, Elite Printing, Sky Castle Limousines, and the Saipan Tribune for sponsoring the dance competition.
