Car sales up nearly 6 percent in October

The Commonwealth Auto Dealer’s Association reported an increase of 5.88 percent in the number of new cars sold in October 2008 compared to the same month last year.

According to the latest CADA data released yesterday, the CNMI’s three car dealers reported sales of 36 units of brand new cars last month, better than the 34 units sold in October 2007.

Joeten Motors, Microl Corp. and Triple J Motors sold a total of 20 cars, four trucks, one van, and 11 sports utility vehicles.

The data showed that Microl Corp., which sells Toyota, Chevrolet and other brands, sold 16 brand new units, to stake out 44.44 percent in market share.

Joeten Motors, the distributor of Nissan, Ford, Honda, Kia and other brands, sold 13 brand new units, a market share of 36.11 percent, while Triple J Motors, which sells Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Susuki, Mazda and others, has 19.44 percent share, with seven units sold.

Toyota remained the top selling brand with 15 unites sold last month.

Nissan and Ford both sold four units each. Honda and Mazda were able to sell three units each, while Kia, Hyundai and Mitsubishi each sold two units. Chevrolet sold only one unit.

CADA also noted an increase of 1.32 percent in car sales on a year to date report as the three dealers sold a total of 536 cars from January to October. This is compared to last year’s sales of only 529 cars sold for the same time period.

The 2008 brand new car sales included 139 SUVs, 297 cars, 52 trucks, 42 vans, and six others.

Sales in used cars also posted an increase from 33 units in September to 38 units in October.

Sales in used cars showed 136 total units sold from January to October.

Both Microl Corp. and Joeten Motors sold 13 units of used cars each, claiming 34.2 percent market share. Following closely is Triple J, which sold 12 units of used cars, representing 31.6 percent in market share.
