On Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, students enrolled in Social Studies classes at Saipan Southern High School participated in a mock U.S. presidential election.

The voting took place in the classrooms of Floyd Masga, Michelle Rasa and Shawna Sablan.

Students voted for either Republican candidate Sen. John McCain or Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama for the next president of the United States.

On Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, students in Masga’s U.S. Government Honors course tallied the votes.

After several recounts, it was determined that out of the 316 students who voted, 85 percent voted for Obama as the 44th president of the United States. Only 15 percent of the students who voted favored Sen. John McCain in last week’s mock election.

The election results from the students’ mock election will be compared to the actual results of the U.S. national election. (PR)
