A poll conducted by American Government students from Rota High School showed that Juan Lizama is favored by Rota voters.

Eighty-six registered voters were polled on who they would vote for the Congressional delegate to the United States Congress. The survey conducted at four high traffic locations was held on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

According to RHS American Government teacher Eusebio Hocog, the project provided the students an opportunity to gauge public sentiment had the election been held on Oct. 29. In addition, the students were able to have hands on experience in conducting a poll.

Lizama led the pack with 37 percent of the votes. The placement among the remaining candidates resulted in multiple ties for second, third, and fourth place. Pedro Tenorio, Gregorio Sablan, and John Gonzales tied for second place. Chong Won and Felipe Atalig filled the third place spot. David Cing and Luis Crisostimo filled the fourth place position with four votes a piece.

As the first-ever election survey conducted in the community by RHS students, there were reservations. “We were hesitant, but as we progressed further into the survey, we became more eager,” said RHS senior Viony Hocog.

The two-hour survey conducted by 16 students found the experience rewarding. Denn Manglona, RHS junior, said “I believe that the survey we conducted helped us both educationally and socially. We were able to open up to the community and learn how to conduct polls.”

Calculating the poll results held just as much excitement and anticipation for the students. “It was unbelievable that Lizama garnered the highest percentage,” said Antonio Barcinas Castro, RHS senior. Jayville Manglona, RHS senior, added “I was surprised that Luis Crisostimo didn’t place as high as I expected.”

The sample size represented approximately 6 percent of the 1,365 registered voters. In the 2005 election, 1,140 voters came out to vote for the Resident Representative to the United States. (PR)
