Defending champion Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will start its title-retention bid against Public School System in the 2008 Inter-Government/Business Softball League to be sponsored for the first time by Budweiser.

The opening game of the softball season-ending tournament between DCCA and PSS in the government division will start tomorrow at 6:30pm at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.

DCCA won both the men’s and women’s division titles last year after winning all of their games including 18 in the regular season.

They scored an unforgettable 43-11 blowout against Customs Aguaguat.

PSS finished third place last year, losing to Customs in the semifinals.

DCCA women’s team will also open its title campaign when it meets Northern Marianas College tomorrow.

Game time is scheduled at 7:30pm with NMC aiming to avenge its 0-2 defeat in their best-of-three series.

The other game Monday will be between Team J’s and P&S in the business division. This game will start at 8:30pm.

Last year’s second place Customs will face Legislature in the government division in the first of three games on Tuesday, Oct. 28, starting at 6:30pm.

No Zone and Pacific Islands Club will square off at 7:30pm, while Freedom Air and CUC will debut at 8:30pm.

This year’s tournament attracted the most number of teams—21 men and six women.

The complete list for the government division men’s teams are DCCA, Customs, Department of Land and Natural Resources, Mayors, Commonwealth Health Center, Judicial, Commonwealth Port Authority, Division of environmental Quality/Coral Reef Management, Commonwealth Utilities Corporation, Legislature, and PSS.

Teams in the men’s business division are Team J’s, No Zone, Freedom Air, POI, Hopwood, Beach Boys, Saipan Cell, Pacific Islands Club, and P&S.

Teams in the women’s side are DCCA, NMC, Finance, CUC, CHC, and PSS. Each team paid a registration fee of $400.

There will be three games per night, which will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday starting at 6:30pm for the first game, 7:30pm for the second game, and 8:30pm for the third game.

The league will have a single-round robin format with the Top 10 teams to go for a double elimination in an add/drop by team’s second game format.

Games for the women’s division will be played every Monday and Friday starting at 7:30pm.

The regular season will be three rounds while the playoffs will be all-in double elimination, also in an add-drop by team’s second game system.
