Legislative leaders have announced the appointment of Glenna SP Reyes to serve as director of the Legislative Bureau.

Reyes replaces former director Joaquin Omar, whose contract expired last month. Her appointment took effect on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, and will remain in effect until Jan. 11, 2010.

Reyes has served as the bureau’s deputy director since February 2006. Before that, she worked as chief of staff for Sen. Pete P. Reyes, who is now her husband.

Reyes was named to the post upon consensus of the leadership of the House and Senate. Senate President Reyes recused himself from discussion due to conflict of interest. He delegated Sen. Maria Pangelinan to represent the Senate in the talks about the LB appointment.

“Despite the many challenges faced by the Legislative Bureau, we have confidence that you possess the necessary qualifications, experience and leadership to fulfill the constitutional mandate to provide professional services to both houses of the Legislature,” Pangelinan and House Speaker Arnold I. Palacios told Reyes in a joint letter.

Reyes will receive a salary of $65,000 a year, an increase of $5,000 from her former salary as deputy director.

The legislative leaders said the position of deputy director of the Legislative Bureau will not be filled. Instead, the bureau will hire an economist as part of its permanent professional staff to serve lawmakers.

“I wish to thank the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate for their confidence in my ability to head the Legislative Bureau. I will do my best in carrying out my duties and responsibility,” Reyes said of her appointment.
