Cabbies learn how to assist clients with disabilities
Twenty members of the Saipan City Taxi Association participated in a two-hour training that will enable its members to better serve members of the public with mental or physical disabilities.
The training, conducted by the Northern Marianas Protection Advocacy Systems Inc. on Oct. 23, 2008, provided the taxi drivers with information about the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA.
The event also included sensitivity training and role playing demonstrations when working with customers who have mental or physical disabilities, and who are seeking transportation from taxi drivers.
Rabby Syed, president of the Association, requested the training for his drivers as he sees people with disabilities as a large part of the community who are in need of transportation services. He wanted to take a proactive approach on what taxi drivers should be aware of when providing services to persons with disabilities, to ensure appropriate services are given and all customers are treated with dignity and respect.
The training was held at the NMPASI conference room, located in Gualo Rai.
NMPASI is the state designated agency, which provides rights protection for people with disabilities through legally-based advocacy or representation and operates with the mission to protect the civil, legal, and human interests of people with disabilities. (PR)
