Teams 4, 5 share futsal league lead
There is a two-way tie for the lead in the Inaugural 2008 NMIFA Women’s Futsal Fall League after last week’s games at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium.
Team 4 and 5 downed their respective foes to share the lead in the six-team field.
Team 4 played in the second game and outclassed Team 1, 4-2, to nail its second straight win in as many games.
CNMI Women’s National Team member Brenda Schultz kicked three goals for Team 4, while Laura Williams added one. Lindsay Davis scored both goals for Team 1, which dropped to a 1-1 record, failing to duplicate its 4-3 triumph over Team 2 during the opening of the league, two weeks ago.
Team 5 also improved to a 2-0 record to tie Team 4 in the No. 1 spot after whipping Team 2, 5-2. Zoe Jewel made three goals to lead Team 5’s second straight victory, while Noi Horey scored both goals for Team 2.
In the first game, Team 3 recovered from its loss to Team 4, beating Team 6, 6-2.
Team 3 now shares second place with Team 1, as the two teams have identical 1-1 slates.
Team 6 and Team 2 are at the bottom of the team standings having lost their first two matches.
Meanwhile, three more companies have given their support to the inaugural league.
AON Insurance, Hardt Eye Clinic, and Marianas Medical Center donated funds to purchase uniforms and equipment for the league.
Three other companies had earlier assisted the league. The list include Wild Bills, the Law Offices of Mat Smith, and Marine Tech International.
“The NMIFA Women’s committee would like to thank these businesses for contributing and helping to promote girls and women’s football in our community,” said Williams. “The teams will use the sponsors’ names as soon as the uniforms are ready.”
Players and organizers of the futsal league also thanked NMC officials for allowing them to use the gym for free.
Games in the futsal league are played every Saturday, from 8:30am to 11:30am. The league will have a round-robin format in the regular season, while the format in the playoffs has yet to be decided.
