Judith T. Won Pat, current speaker of the Guam Legislature, has confirmed her participation as a panelist for tomorrow’s forum on gender issues. She will join other highly regarded and accomplished leaders like Sen. Maria “Frica” Pangelinan, Rebecca Warfield, Agnes McPhetres, Kimberly King-Hinds, Cinta Kaipa, and Laura Manglona.

In addition to serving as the current speaker, Won Pat has also been elected to the 23rd, 24th, 26th and 28th Guam Legislatures. Further, she has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Guam’s College of Education, a principal at the Dededo Middle School and the F. B. Leon Guerrero Middle School, and a deputy director for Guam’s Department of Labor. She earned her doctorate degree from the University of San Diego and master’s degree from the University of Guam.

Titled “The X Chromosome: Gender Equality in the CNMI,” the forum is sponsored by the Northern Marianas Council for the Humanities as part of its We the People Project and organized by Taro Leaf Inc.

Women today have less traditional “gender barriers” than their counterparts just a few decades ago. Political, business and community leaders like those mentioned earlier will be discussing whether these barriers still exist. They will also talk about whether it still takes “one of the boys” to obtain certain leadership roles in business or in government. The role of gender in leadership styles will also be discussed.

Pioneering CNMI women will also share their own experiences in shattering the glass ceiling and important lessons they’ve learned while doing so. Other topics will include other key issues facing today’s women. The forum will be moderated by Frances Sablan.

Members of the community are encouraged to participate in the dialogue by personally attending the forum and enjoying complimentary refreshments at the Pacific Islands Club Charley’s Cabaret on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6pm to 8pm.

Off-island residents can also participate by watching the forum live on the internet at www.wethepeoplecnmi.com. Instructions on submitting questions and comments can be found on the site. (PR)
