The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and the Public School System are almost done with their reconciliation of records to determine how much PSS actually owes CUC in utility bills.

CUC executive director Antonio Muña told Saipan Tribune that the reconciliation process started a couple of weeks ago.

“I think we are very close to that right now. The reconciliation process is coming to a close,” Muña said.

He said CUC provided PSS with their information to expedite the reconciliation with PSS records.

PSS, according to the executive director, also provided CUC with its information.

Muña said they should be able to determine anytime this week the actual amount PSS owes CUC.

Muña earlier stated that PSS owes CUC $1.8 million in overdue payments but PSS denied owing CUC anything. Records obtained by Saipan Tribune through an Open Government Act request indicated PSS owes CUC at least $1.2 million for fiscal year 2008, not including the month of September.

PSS acting finance director Lori Grizzard early this month stated that PSS and CUC are reconciling another $600,000 that PSS officials believe they have been overcharged.

Grizzard said the CNMI government will pay for the PSS’ $414,000 October 2006 billing from CUC.

Muña said the reconciliation process was done because CUC and PSS are talking about different amounts.

He said since the two entities have different numbers with respect to what may be due them and what may be owed them, a direct reconciliation process is the way to confirm where the differences are or where the discrepancies are.

“And that’s where we worked with PSS financial staff and our financial staff to resolve the issue,” Muña added.
