Worker nabbed after overstaying for 9 years
An alien worker who has reportedly been overstaying in the CNMI for almost a decade was arrested last week after eluding Immigration officers for more than five years.
Longzhu Li, a Chinese, was brought before Superior Court associate judge Perry B. Inos last Friday. Assistant Attorney General Kathleen Busenkell represented the NMI government.
Inos imposed a $5,000 cash bail for Li’s temporary liberty and ordered him to appear in court on Oct. 23 at 1:30pm to explain why he should not be deported.
Inos said the respondent should be released to two officers of the Attorney General’s Investigative Unit’s but only for the purpose of renewing his passport.
The judge remanded Li to the custody of the Department of Corrections.
Court records show that in September 2002 the Division of Immigration filed a deportation case against Li after learning that his worker’s entry permit had expired in June 1999.
A deportation hearing was set for March 13, 2003. Li did not show up in court that day.
Superior Court Associate Judge David Wiseman in that hearing granted the Attorney General’s Office’s request to issue a default judgment. The judge ordered Li’s deportation.
In July 2005, Wiseman issued a bench warrant against Li after Immigration informed the court that the respondent has been eluding CNMI officials since 2003.
Immigration found out through the Border Management System that Li has not left the CNMI.
