Saipan Golf Association members asserted their might in last weekend’s 3rd Annual Kristo Rai Parish Golf Tournament at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort as five of them made it to the Top 3 in various flights.

Leading the list was Manny Alvarez, who ruled the Seniors Flight with his gross score of three-over par 75.

Actually, Alvarez was tied with fellow SGA member and former Superior Court judge Ed Manibusan for first, as the latter also fired a gross 75. But Alvarez defeated Manibusan on the tiebreak hole No. 8 with the former making an even on the par four hole against the latter’s bogey.

Manibusan was relegated to second place with a one-shot lead against third placer Nick Sablan, who carded a gross four-over par 76.

Another SGA member who made his mark in the Kristo Rai tournament was A Flight top finisher Ray San Nicolas.

San Nicolas had a gross 79 to beat Ed Manglona (80) and Frank Castro (80).

Two other SGA members were runners-up in their respective division with Rick Kautz placing second in the centerpiece Championship Flight, and SGA president Martin Sablan in the C Flight.

Kautz, who moved to the Championship Flight this year, after finishing first in the A Flight last year, showed consistency in his game, firing an even par 72 on the Kagman course.

Kautz started strong with a one-under par 35 on the front nine, before slowing down a bit on the back with a two-over par 37.

The SGA member was three shots ahead of third placer Joji Taguchi, who carded a three-over par 75. Micronesian Games gold medalist Jess Wabol prevailed in the Championship Flight with his impressive three-under par 69.

Sablan was runner-up to Jerry Ayuyu after the former drilled a gross 89, four strokes behind the latter’s 85. Ruogi Takeshi shot a 90 to finish third.

Meanwhile, SGA will be holding its October Ace of the Month tournament on Oct. 19 with the time and venue to be announced later.
