Fitial inks three proclamations
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has signed separate proclamations calling for the observance of humanities, soil and water conservation, and arbor month.
On Friday, the governor proclaimed October as CNMI Humanities Month, urging the local citizens to participate in the activities organized by the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities.
The Humanities Council, a private, non-profit corporation, will announce the recipients of the 2008 Governor’s Humanities Awards during the month. The annual awards recognize outstanding individual contributions in the humanities, as well as contributions made by donors, partners and former members of the Council’s board of directors who have supported humanities programming in the CNMI over the past two decades.
On Thursday, Fitial proclaimed October as Commonwealth Arbor Month, called on CNMI residents to support the effort of planting and protecting trees.
October will also be Soil and Water Conservation Month in the Commonwealth. During this month, the CNMI Soil and Water Conservation Districts are expected to conduct programs promoting conservation measures, especially on farmlands, construction sites, secondary roads, and residential areas.
“Soil and Water Conservation Month reminds us of our individual responsibility to care for the soil and water resources upon which we depend. This month is in recognition of our efforts to protect these natural resources, which are vital to a good quality of life for all CNMI residents,” says the proclamation.
“Every citizen of this Commonwealth is urged to become more aware of the need to protect and conserve our soil and water resources and to learn to use these resources in a sustainable manner,” the proclamation adds.
