The Search and Rescue Group Guam is coordinating a medical evacuation for two male crewmembers who are in critical condition after being involved in an accident on board an ocean-going bulk carrier.

According to a U.S. Coast Guard statement issued yesterday, the accident occurred late Thursday night while the ship was 750 nautical miles north of Saipan.

A U.S. Air Force aircraft with four parajumpers will take off from Kadena Air Force Base in Japan to assess the situation and provide urgent medical care.

This evening, when the vessel is 150 nautical miles from Saipan, Guam-based Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two Five plans to launch two helicopters from Guam to hoist the injured crewmembers and then fly them to Naval Hospital Guam for urgent care.

Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy personnel are diligently working together to save the lives of these two mariners in dire need.
