Japanese, Korean riders joining Point Break Open
Around 40 flowriders will put on a show in this weekend’s 2nd International PIC/Monsters Point Break Open at the Pacific Islands flowrider facility in San Antonio.
The competition, which will bring participants from Korea and Japan, and other Asian countries to Saipan, is similar to a surfing tournament. But instead of a surfboard, riders use a bodyboard in a flowrider water facility which has artificial waves.
Tournament director Glenn Francis Policare said riders will be judged by creativity, variety of movements, speed, difficulty of movement, style, and poise.
A panel of five judges will grade each rider from 0 to 10 with 10 as the highest points.
There will be competitions in four divisions, namely the men’s and women’s open, kids category, and the grommets. The kids division is for participants in the 12 to 17 age group, while grommets will feature riders in the 11-and-under age group.
The men’s and women’s open divisions will have a qualifying round tonight to determine the seeding. The qualifier will start at 5pm.
Seedings are needed for pairings in the actual competition tomorrow as tournament format will have a top-ranked rider being pitted with a low-seed one in the two-person heat.
Each rider will be given 45 seconds to one minute to execute their moves. Movements will be categorized from easy to difficult.
PIC is encouraging local riders to join the tournament and challenge Japanese and Korean bets.
“We promise to have a very competitive contests in the men’s and women’s open. It will be a show of grace, balance, and speed,” Policare said.
Entrance fee is $30 for the men’s and women’s open divisions, while interested participants in the two other age groups will pay only $20. Entrance fees will cover admission to banquet.
Registration in the men’s and women’s divisions will last until 5pm tonight.
