Team Mak’Po buckled down to work after a mediocre start to outlast the Bratz and clinch the title in the Boys 18-year old and under division that capped the two-day SAPTember volleyball tournament at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium last Sunday, Sept. 21.

Organized by the Community Guidance Center of the Department of Public Health and sanctioned by the NMI Volleyball Association, the tournament was part of the observance of the Substance Abuse Prevention and Recovery Month.

A total of 10 teams in three divisions took part in the one-day competition.

CGC sports coordinator Becky Covarrubias was happy with the good turnout as she thanked all those who volunteered their services and helped make the tournament a great success.

Mak’Po dropped the first set, 10-21, as the Bratz momentarily took control of the show with aggressive plays.

But Mak’Po struggled to win the second set, 21-15, before wrapping up the big win with an easy 21-15 count in the deciding third set.

It was a double celebration for Mak’Po as the team also won the sportsmanship award.

Bratz settled for second place while Look Out Jammers were third.

In the girls’ 18-and-under division, youth prevailed over experience.

Champion Team Magas, who are composed mostly of junior national athletes, outsmarted the runner-up Swingers in straight sets, 21-18, 21-18.

Bonafide, which won the division’s sportsmanship award, was third while Magahagas placed fourth.

The Eagles also rallied back from a first set deficit before pulling off a 15-21, 21-13, 15-12 triumph over the stunned Terns in another exciting championship match in the Co-ed 14-and- under division.

The sportsmanship award for the division was given to the third placer Geckos.
