New water reservoir opened on Navy Hill
The CNMI Water Task Force yesterday held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the recent startup of the new water reservoir on Navy Hill.
The new water reservoir will provide water to the businesses and residents of Navy Hill, lower Chalan Galaide, China Town, upper MIHA, and the Commonwealth Health Center.
The $1.4 million project, paid for with federal funds from the U.S. Office of Insular Affairs, involves the construction of a new steel water storage tank and the rehabilitation of an existing concrete water storage tank. Each reservoir holds 500,000 gallons of water.
The project also includes one emergency generator and a building, as well as a chlorination and booster pump system, and new water lines.
OIA Director Nikolao Pula, who is on island to meet with local leaders on energy issues, said he was pleased to see the completed project. He said he will continue to work with the CNMI government toward improving the local utilities.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial expressed his appreciation to OIA for funding the reservoir project. “[I] look forward to more successful infrastructure projects resulting from the accountable and prudent use of federal funds,” he said.
The Water Task Force administered the project. The local contracting firm, GPPC, began the construction in May 2007 and finished it in June 2008.
