The opening ceremony for the first basketball league organized by the Pilpino Contract Workers Association has been moved from Sept. 28 to Oct. 12.

PILCOWA sports coordinator Pando Muleta said postponement of the opening date was made to allow teams to prepare their uniforms as well as give others the chance to complete their team rosters.

As of yesterday noon, a total of seven teams have confirmed their participation in the inaugural league. Three others have signified their intention but have yet to submit their roster of players.

Each team must have 14 players with an entry fee of $500 per team.

Muleta said they want to make the opening ceremony as colorful as possible. There will be a parade of participating teams but they have yet to discuss the route.

There will also be awards for the Best Uniform and Best Muse.

In a related development, an organizational meeting for the PILCOWA caging is set at 6pm today at the pavilion across the CIC Centre along Beach Road.

Muleta said all team managers and coaches or representatives of teams must attend the meeting.

To be discussed will be tournament format, entrance fee, roster, uniforms, and issues related to the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, the tournament will be officially known as the First PILCOWA/SMB Basketball League.’

This after Pacific Trading Co., sole distributor of San Miguel Beer products in the CNMI, agreed to be the major sponsor of the league.

Pacific Trading Co. marketing manager Mike Babauta met with league organizers and PILCOWA officers recently to finalize the agreement.
